Grey's Anatomy ~ Perfect Little Accident

Overall it was a fairly upbeat episode of Grey’s this week, wouldn’t you say? It was a little light on the drama, and all of the relevant patients made it out alive (sorry Dare Devil, but your lungs will live on).

Here’s a quick jist of what when down with the cases:
(Heads up: I didn't have time to proof read this at all, so I'm sure there are a million typos. Just roll with it!)

The Dare Devil

As Owen and Cristina were leaving the hospital a trauma came in by ambulance. The dare devil was already pretty far gone, but things got a lot worse for him when the ambulance driver slipped on an icy peddle and poor guys’ gurney tipped over. Owen heads off to work on the patient, but Charles (one of the Mercy Westers I couldn’t care less about) gets the case since Cristina isn’t even in scrubs. After a giving a statement to the legal about the gurney accident, Cristina takes a detour over to misdiagnose the famous Harper Avery, who just happens to be Jackson’s grandfather. She somehow manages to get back on the dare devil’s case and gets a face full of blood right in Harper Avery’s view. The patient is a goner, but Charles manages to stabilize him enough to keep him around for organ donation. We’ll be seeing his lungs again in a little bit.

The Famous Surgeon

Dr. Harper Avery, who is so famous he gets to hand out awards named after himself (remember when Burke got it and Hahn and Cristina were wicked pissed?), passed out at a restaurant with abdominal pain. It turns out that he is Jackson’s grandfather. Avery (played by Chelcie Ross, aka Conrad “Connie” Hilton on Mad Men) demanded the best. First he asked for Dr. Grey, meaning Ellis of course (because, who are we kidding, you aren’t “great” yet – remember when you dropped a kidney?). When Meredith told him that she passed away, he asked for the next best thing – Richard. This was Richard’s first day back on the job (he had to pee in a cup for Derek) and he was looking forward to a low stress day. Not so much anymore. Avery bullied Derek and Richard into performing surgery on him while he was awake so he could watch. He was meddlesome and asked a lot of questions. He demanded that Richard use a different type of sutures then he was planning. Joke was on him though, but after the surgery he got sick again. This time Derek put him foot down and said Avery couldn’t be awake during the surgery and that Jackson would have to hang out in the waiting room. They were doing this by the book. Richard tries to back out of doing the surgery, and tells Derek that he feels like having a drink. Derek says that Richard has made progress and that he can do this. Bailey assisted him this time around. Turns out that he was allergic to the sutures he requested which Richard couldn’t have known. Snap! Throughout this storyline Meredith and Jackson bonded over how difficult to grow up in the shadow of a famous surgeon. It also turns out that Avery has been holding a spot open for Jackson at Mass Gen. Meredith encourages Jackson to learn everything he can from his grandfather before it is too late. I suspect that Avery will be peacing out by the end of the season. Too bad – he was the only Mercy Wester that I didn’t mind. Anyways, the best part of this storyline was clearly this moment when Jackson properly introduced some of his "friends" to his grandfather:

The Lung Kid

Arizona recruits Teddy’s help for a former patient of hers, Karl from Lost. Okay, I don’t remember his actual character name – so we’re just going to keep calling him Karl. Go with it. Karl has survived leukemia and lymphoma, but his lungs are damaged beyond repair from all the radiation. Unfortunately, he is deemed a very high risk candidate for a lung transplant, which means he isn’t going to get one. In the hallway Lexie asks about the possibility of doing a fancy new procedure where they repair lungs from a donor which have been too damaged for transplant. Cristina, who was just passing by, is super interested in this, especially since she had just made a fool out of herself in front of Harper Avery. When Cristina suggests to Teddy that this type of surgery could definitely impress Avery and put her in consideration for the award, Teddy says that people who are obsessed with prizes do not have their priorities straight. When she leaves Charles wanders by to mention that the Dare Devil is being kept alive long enough to have his organs harvested. How convenient! Lexie and Cristina go rouge and rescue the lungs, which were rejected by the transplant people. Since they were just going to get thrown out, they request the organs using Teddy’s name. When Teddy finds out she is pissed. She yells at Cristina for stealing the organs.

“She was being green.” ~ Lexie

While Teddy scolds Cristina Lexie works away on the lungs in a nifty looking plastic bubble. The lungs are suddenly viable and they all rush off to let Karl know he can have these hand-me-down lungs. His sister is a bitch about it, and says she wants new lungs because that’s what he deserves. Screw that, Karl wants these lungs. He’s tired, and if he dies it’s not a big deal – his affairs are in order. He’s done fighting. He’ll take his chances with the hand-me-downs. The surgery is a success thanks to some good teamwork between Teddy and Cristina.

Deaf Mom

Callie’s patient ruptured her tendon, and also happens to be deaf and stubborn. Her adult daughter, who lives with her, complains that she won’t get a hearing aid or learn sign language, so they have to scream at each other all day. Not so pleasant. Callie brings Sloan in on the case and he says that he can remove some bone from her ear canal and restore her hearing (or something along those lines). Both his and Callie’s surgeries are successful and the woman’s hearing is fully restored just in time to hear her daughter complain about how she gave up her life to live with her mother. Her mom says that she’s got that backwards. Her daughter was a tramp and she was the one who needed taking care of. At the end of the day they were both happy, they were getting their separate lives, and the daughter slept with Mark. Yeah, more on his man whorey ways later.

On a more personal level, here’s what was going on outside of surgery. Arizona approached Teddy and told her that she’s been watching Teddy stare at Owen, and that she is going to fix her. She declares that they are going to be friends and invites her to have a “girl’s night” with her, Callie, and possibly Bailey. Teddy is a little terrified by Arizona’s peppy enthusiasm, but agrees.

Alex spent all episode having surgeries withheld for be a man whore. Glad to see that Arizona had some sort of reaction to last week’s revelation.

“Oh no. Because you slept with my girlfriend and I find that when I look at you I want to hit you with a brick... jealousy's a green eyed monster and if you ask any one of my kids, they'll tell you that there's no reasoning with a monster. Dude, run away before I find a brick. (to Teddy) As my new friend, don't judge me for that.”

Mark’s serial killer eyes also scared Alex right out of an operating room. The guy was having a rough week.

Mark has returned to his man whoring ways and managed to have meaningless sex with at least three people (that we know of) in the hospital over the course of one day. That’s pretty impressive. Mark says this that he is moving on, but Callie scolds him.

“Getting out of bed and not wearing sweats all day is a sign of moving on. Sleeping with the nurses? Not so much.”

Mark told her that he wouldn’t have to sleep with nurses if she would put out, but Callie shut that down real quick by reminding him that she’s in a committed, loving, adult relationship. Damn right. After he kicks Alex out of surgery, Callie yells at him and tells him to grow up. She knows he’s hurting from losing Lexie and from Little Sloan abandoning him, but being giant douche isn’t going to do anything about it. He needs to man up. But when he goes to apologize to Alex, he finds more than he bargained for.

Lexie and Alex have continued to sleep together, but according to Lexie (whom Derek accidentally saw naked in the beginning of the episode) it is just meaningless sex. Meredith says that she isn’t a sex without feelings kind of girl.

“Your heart lives in your vagina!”

She continues to try and prove everyone otherwise. At the end of the episode she tells Alex that if he can’t handle sex without feelings than she’ll go find another guy who can. Alex says he’s fine with sleeping with her, he just didn’t want her getting all emotional and use him to make Mark jealous. Twenty minutes later Alex emerges from an on call room where Mark apologizes, but Lexie appears a moment later from the same room, adjusting her clothes, and breaks Mark’s heart all over again. I know that Lexie thinks she can handle this meaningless sex, but I don’t think it can possible go on for long. Blonde or not, she isn’t that kind of girl.

And instead of talking about girls night, here are some high lights. This filled me with all sorts of glee.

Grey's Anatomy ~ Time Warp

This week’s episode was a nice change of pace from the normal hustle and bustle of Seattle Grace / Mercy West. As part of the lecture series Derek has reinstated, we took a trip back through time to visit some of the ground breaking moments in the careers of Bailey, Callie, and Richard. We didn’t get a whole lot of new information, and none of the current plotlines were advanced beyond Richard celebrating 45 days sober and being told that the board has turned down his reinstatement for now. Derek offered him position in general surgery, but Richard turns him down (for now).

Bailey

We start off seeing Bailey get ready for her presentation, looking snazzy in pink, and getting checked out by the Gas Man (whom I think we still haven’t been formally introduced to, but the internet tells me his name is Ben Warren). It’s hard to tell exactly how much time has passed, but we know that this is at least 45 days after the Chief went to rehab, so I think it’s safe to bet that Bailey and the Gas Man have gone out on at least one day by now. Things seem to be going pretty good so far.

Not surprisingly, Bailey is an excellent public speaker. She entertains the masses by awarding them with candy. Cristina, having been pelted with a piece of candy for not paying attention at the beginning of Bailey’s talk, is super competitive. Even Arizona is seen munching on candy at one point during the lecture.

Bailey takes us back to 2003, when she was just three days into her internship (3 years before we met her). Back then she was timid and quiet, our first look at the band nerd, star wars geek, awkward bookworm, that we have been told about in the past. “Mandy” (as she was still calling herself) is sporting some pretty awesome pink glasses and long braids. She in constantly stuck at the back of the intern pack, hidden due to her height and meek voice. When she tries to speak up during rounds, catching Richard’s eye, her resident from hell, played by the always enjoyable Missi Pyle, gives her a hell of a smack down and reminds her that she is at the bottom of the surgical food chain. While their patient is in surgery Bailey quietly pipes in with some useful info about the patient being a vegan. Richard is impressed with the thorough medical history Bailey’s taken. Missi Pyle is not amused, and punishes Bailey with scut.

The patient comes and goes, and comes again. At one point Bailey thinks her appendix might be what was causing the issues, so she gets to remove it. Unfortunately, the appendix was perfectly fine. Oops! Oh well, at least she got some rocking advice from Richard during the surgery.

“Surgery's a shark tank,'' he told her. ''And sharks have teeth. Make sure you're a shark, too. And not a minnow . . . . God made you short. Who made you quiet?”

When the patient is sent away again without a diagnosis, and after some lame credit steeling by Missi Pyle, Bailey drowns her sorrows at Joe’s. This was mostly so we could see Joe with awesome long hair. Well worth it.

Finally, when the patient is admitted once again, Bailey goes from minnow to shark. She figures out that the woman suffers from prophyria, and cancels Missi Pyle’s surgery. She then gets to let loose with her very first Bailey speech, telling Missi Pyle off for being scalpel happy and not caring enough about the patients to take a good history put the pieces together. Richard is listening the whole time and eventually has to step in because Bailey is loosing it a little, and really shouldn’t be yelling at her resident like that. He pulls her into his office, pretends to scold at her, and tells her that she is going to be an excellent surgeon.

Callie

Public speaking and Callie are not friends. They might in fact be mortal enemies. It’s funny that someone as inherently hardcore and kick-ass as Callie would be so completely undone by the idea of giving a lecture. We first find her on her bathroom floor, with Arizona brushing her hair. She’s cursing Derek Shepherd, but Arizona tells her to calm down and to not vomit again, because she just finished getting all of the puke out of her hair. That is love, ladies and gentlemen.

She is a complete mess on stage. To start, she nervously fidgets with her laptop trying to pull up her presentation, doing what Cristina identifies as her pee dance. She accidentally pulled up a cute picture of her and Arizona before getting to the right picture of legs horribly contorted by Polio. She is a mess. She mumbles quietly, drops her note cards, and panics. Arizona yells out for her just to talk – to tell them what happened. She continues to be a complete mess until Alex helps move her along (he worked with her on the case). Finally, by the end of the episode she was sitting at the end of the stage, talking pretty much directly to Alex, and she made it through the whole thing, getting around of applause and everything. But seriously folks, don’t ever put Callie through that again.

The case took place during what would have been season 1 of the series. We didn’t meet Callie until later on, but of course she was around! Alex flirts his way onto Callie’s case, letting her believe that he was “the heart in the elevator guy” (RIP George). The case was a grad student who suffered from severe polio. His legs looked like an “S”. Callie, being the Ortho God that she is, promised the patient that she would be able get him to walk again. Richard is angry at Callie for making that promise, which was admittedly pretty cocky. He tells her that her career at Seattle Grace will hinge on this surgery.

The surgery starts off well, and Callie is able to fix the patient’s clubbed foot, but his lungs were too weak to the surgery. She tells the patient that she doesn’t think they can do another surgery, but he wiggles his toes for the first time since he was a child and says she can do it. They go back into surgery again, but this time something is up with his heart and she needs Alex to “do the heart thing” like in the elevator. Confession time. Alex admits that he wasn’t that guy, but Callie says he’s going to do it now anyway and talks him though it. In the end Callie was able to straighten out the patients legs (the X-rays get a big round of applause in the lecture), and he is able to walk with crutches. Callie gets a nice approving hand on the shoulder from Richard, and she and Alex celebrate. And by celebrate she means they totally had sex in her basement apartment. She invokes the cone of silence, and they never speak of it again. There’s a moment at the end of Callie’s lecture where Arizona realizes Callie and Alex slept together, and she isn’t too amused.

Richard

Richard delivered a compelling and heartfelt lecture. The man was born to talk. He takes us back to a case he worked on with Ellis Grey in 1982. He and Ellis were both treated horribly by racist/sexist men of Seattle Grace. They were both outcasts, which meant the worked twice as hard as everyone else for a tenth of the recognition. So this is the hard-core Ellis we have heard so much about (played by the always wonderful Sarah Paulson). Richard (played by J. August Richards – who will always be Gunn to us) and she worked together to diagnose a patient with AIDS, back when it was still being called GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency). The patient pitched a fit, threatened to sue them for slander, and got them in trouble with their boss, who I’m sure had a name but I’m going to keep calling Mitchum Huntzberger (Gilmore Girls). A little while down the road the patient comes back back with complications from Kaposi’s Sarcoma, admits he is gay, and no one in the hospital will get within 20 feet of him besides Ellis and Richard.

This was the first case of AIDS in Washington, and no one understood its cause, how it was spread, or how to treat it. They were repeatedly told that he was going to die anyway, so they shouldn’t waste their time. When even the patient echoes this sentiment, Richard suggested that there could be a cure next week for all they know – why not right it with everything they have? They performed surgery on the patient, but he eventually died with complications from pneumonia. They held his hands while he died.

In other new news, Ellis and Richard were sleeping together this whole time (which we already knew), and they were pretty hot together. When we saw young Thatcher, who looked like a poor man’s Howie Mandel, we really couldn’t blame her. Little Meredith was adorable, however, with her Anatomy Jane doll. Ellis was just as cold to her as we’d expect, but to be fair it was wicked lame of Thatcher to bring her to the hospital like that. Ellis tries to convince Richard to leave Adelle. She says that their marriages were a lie, that what was between them was real. He says that he couldn’t do that, but she responded simply with “We’ll see.” We of course know that Richard doesn’t leave Adelle for Ellis, but Ellis does leave Thatcher and go all sorts of crazy. We also see Ellis encouraging Richard to man up and drink liquor. Well that sure turned out super for everyone. At the end of the lecture he has everyone stand and he recites the Physician’s Oath.

More than anything this episode made me miss the Richard from the beginning of the series. The one who wasn’t obsessed with hospital finances and appearances. The one who molded residents into great surgeons. The one who fought for what was right. All three lectures showed us the best in Richard. Let’s hope he’s on the way back to his former glory.

TV Blind Dates ~ Part 1

Courtney is out of town for a few days and new episodes from this week’s programming will wait patiently in the DVRs for her return. So in the interest of satisfying my own boredom I have put together this little time waster.

With the aid of an extremely handy online secret santa name drawing tool I have randomly put together 15 TV Blind Dates featuring some of our favorite characters. Ignoring current (or potential) romantic entanglements, as well as geographical and temporal barriers specific to their respective shows, let’s see show these characters match up! Here are our first five match-ups!

Temperance Brennan (Bones) and Mark Sloan (Grey’s Anatomy)

Common Ground: They are both doctors, and are extremely good looking. They are fans of sex without romantic entanglements. They are neither humble nor shy, and both are well off financially.

Possible Conflicts: Brennan’s literal way of thinking may become a bit tiresome to Mark, who is a fan of obscure references and insinuation. Mark may be a little too smug for Brennan’s tastes.

At the end of the date: 87% probability of a one night stand. 7% chance of a second date.

Sue Sylvester (Glee) and Phil Dunphy (Modern Family)

Common Ground: Phil was a cheerleader in college, so that should give them plenty to talk about. Plus they are both remarkably tall.

Possible Conflicts: Phil is much too weak of a man for Sue. She would destroy him physically and emotionally. But it sure would be fun to watch, right?

At the end of the date: 99% chance that Sue says “You think this is hard? Try __________. That’s Hard!”, 10% chance of this happening in a sexual circumstance.

Callie Torres (Grey’s Anatomy) and Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother)

Common Ground: They both have mighty fine singing voices (well, Sara does if Callie doesn’t). They both like the ladies, so they could always talk about that. Whenever Barney gets something broken by a jealous boyfriend or a particularly strong lady conquest, Callie could patch him right up.

Possible Conflicts: Callie’s more of a relationship kind of person. Also, I’m going to go ahead and call her mostly gay nowadays. Barney just came out of a real relationship with Robin, so he’s definitely going to be playing the field for a while.

At the end of the date: 0% chance of a second date, but Callie might be up to being his occasional wingman (wingwoman . . . winglady . . . whichever).

Olivia Dunham (Fringe) and Seeley Booth (Bones)

Common Ground: They are both highly skilled FBI agents (sometimes Olivia is classified as DHS, it’s so hard to keep track). They both look good in suits. They each spend a significant amount of their work day around dead bodies. They are both willing to bend the rules a little if it’s the right thing to do. Olivia is good with kids, so visits with Parker would go smoothly.

Possible Conflicts: Olivia’s work in the Fringe division lends itself to secrecy and government cover-ups, both of which Booth has major issues with.

At the end of the date: 67% chance that at least one of them will get called in to work before the date ends. Possibility of a second date, 25%.

Juliet Burke (Lost) and Gregory House (House)

Common Ground: They are both doctors. House would probably be able to figure out that pesky island pregnancy problem, but sending his team to break into the island’s apartment would probably prove tricky. They both command authority, and at first glance it’s difficult to tell whether they are a good or bad guy.

Possible Conflict: Juliet would put up with a certain amount of name calling and sarcasm (she was with Sawyer after all), but eventually he’d go too far and she would be forced to kick his ass.

At the end of the date: Likelihood that Juliet puts up with House for an entire date, only 35%.

Grey's Anatomy ~ I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked

In interest of not rambling on and on about this weeks plot, like I did last week, here are a few quick plot bullets, and then we’re chat a bit.

  • Izzie returned to suck the life and joy out of every room she entered.

  • Derek took on the Chief’s alcoholism after some tricky maneuvering the laws of the post-it.

  • Callie got a nasty case of the chicken pox and was quarantined so that she didn’t become Seattle Grace's own personal outbreak monkey.

  • Mark and Lexie came clean to each other about their dalliances. Lexie is relieved and thinks they’re even, but Mark doesn’t take it so hot.

  • Alex told Izzie to leave and never come back (for the love of god listen to the man!).

  • Cristina told Teddy that she chooses surgery over Owen which Teddy drunkenly tells Owen about a minute later, but Owen isn’t willing to let Cristina give up so easily.

Okay folks, seriously - just keep Katherine Heigl off our TV. I know there are people out there who still care about her character (we are not among them), but can anyone honestly say that her presence added anything to this episode beside awkwardness? It felt like anytime she showed up the pace came to a screeching halt. Even Jackson, the Mercy Wester who we barely know, fit in more comfortably whenever he appeared. I think it’s time for everyone to face that Izzie no longer serves a purpose and should just be put out to pasture. Will she be? Not completely, because we know she’ll be returning again at some point later in the season. Hopefully Shonda do us (and Heigl) a solid and release her from her contract at the end of the season. The dialogue sure implies that she should be done for good:

“I want you to go and be happy and not come back.” ~ Alex

''I can't be here anymore. … I have to start over, I need to start over.'' ~ Izzie

You don’t have to kill her off, just let her go. Maybe she should take a walk in the parking lot of no return.

On the Richard/Derek/Meredith front, was it cruel of Derek to have poured that drink in front of Richard, knowing he couldn’t resist? Maybe a little. Was Derek doing it for the greater good of the hospital, or so he could snag the role of interim Chief? Methinks a little bit of both. In the end it was the right thing to do. Was Meredith in denial of the Chief’s alcoholism because she honestly trusts him (like a father, at this point), or because she was benefiting with specialized education and opportunities? Again, probably a little of both. What’s most important is that the Chief is going to get help and hopefully the hospital can start sucking a little less. Speaking of which, how great was it that Owen was actually hording sterile surgical equipment since they had run out the night before? Back to Derek and Meredith, I like that we can see them argue and struggle like this, but at the end of the day we can see that they’re going to be okay as a couple. PS: It is still a little strange for us to be liking Meredith as much as we do now. She had us all smiles when she invoked the power of the post-it and with her little fist pump in the air later on the episode.

Finally, Callie and her chicken pox killed us. While Izzie was busy sucking the life out of her parts of the episode, Callie was working overtime with the funny to compensate. We loved her descent into madness and trying to threaten/convince Lexie to remove her gauze paws so she could relieve herself of the pain of the thousand itches ("...not funny crazy, bad crazy. Dark crazy. Its make a suit out of someone else's skin crazy...").While it would have been easy to be a little mad at Arizona for pretending that she hadn’t had chicken pox so that she wasn’t quarantined in with Callie, she’s immediately forgiven when she reveals to Lexie that she did it because she is so in awe and in love with Callie that she was afraid that the oozing, itching, crazy Callie might take them past the sexy part of things. In the end she climbs into the bed with Callie and said she doesn’t care if she gets the pox (which of course she couldn’t, but still). Oh, and we finally get to see Callie and Arizona getting frisky in the hospital, which is how Callie’s pox are discovered. Also, according to Arizona, hospital sex is a sure fire cure for headaches. Valuable information for all.

Quotes of the night:

“Izzie leaves and Mark gets a kid, and you two decide the best way to deal is to get drunk and mash your genitals together?” ~ Meredith

“Alex and I, we've done it before. I was recycling, it was like good for the environment.” ~ Lexie.

“It's like if you tell someone their baby is ugly. You know it, they know it - but you don't say it.” ~ Meredith

“You're gonna touch doorknobs and then you'll be the outbreak monkey.” ~ Arizona

“Take off my gauze paws.” ~ Callie

PS: It makes me crazy when they release promo pictures for things that don’t actually end up happening in the episode -  but to release a picture with a new character that doesn’t even end up appearing? WTF, guys? This dude is clearly going to be a love interest for Bailey, but I didn’t see him anywhere in this episode. Did you?

Grey's Anatomy ~ Blink

It’s been a long time since Grey’s threw Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years at us and disappeared. Almost two months. Is this too long for a show to go on winter hiatus? Yes. Is it anywhere near as long as Glee is forcing us to wait? No. So it’ll be forgiven this time – I might not be so understanding next season! This week Grey’s returned with the much hyped crossover event, although Addison was so barely used on the Grey’s side of things that I almost forgot she was there! They saved all of the juicy Addison/Mark stuff for Private Practice which, lets face it, can always use the ratings.

We had a lot of things going on this episode, so let’s review:
(This recap ended up being waaaaaaaaaaaay to long, but I spent too much time writing it to not post it all – so this might take you a while)

Things aren’t going so smoothly for Lexie and Mark, relationship wise. Sloan (the daughter) is seriously cramping Lexie’s life, and she is in no way prepared to help Mark raised his grandchild with his daughter. Remember how Lexie chopped off her finger tips when Sloan moved in? Yeah – she’s not ready for that. By the end of the episode they are broken up and she is in bed with Alex.

Sloan’s baby is in trouble and the current gyno staff at Seattle Grace apparently sucks so hard that Mark calls Addison and has her rush out to save the day. Unfortunately Mark has turned into a nervous daddy and makes Addison stop in the middle of surgery when there was a slight risk that Sloan could have bled out. Addison goes home, but Mark and Sloan soon follow right behind her to have the surgery. I don’t know how that went yet, because we only made it 15 minutes into Private Practice before passing out – but I do know that Addison and Mark get all hot and sweaty in Addison’s office.

Derek, Callie, and Bailey are treating an injured football star. Upon Addison’s suggestion, Derek tries to set Bailey up on a date with the new guy in radiology.

''I'm in the middle of a divorce. People call me the Nazi, and it's not because of my ice blue eyes. I spend 12 hours a day carving people up, and I like it. I have a child and I have no room for casual anything. I'm angry all the time. … You want lunch, or you wanna show me the scan?''

It didn’t go so hot. As a byproduct of this, Derek discovers that Bailey has been taking extra good after care of the patient that turned yellow when the chief messed up the surgery, and begins to deduce that there is a reason why he won’t operate. By the end of the episode Meredith tells him that the Chief has been drinking again. That should go well for everyone.

Oh yeah, and the Mercy Westers are still around. Almost forgot about those guys! Reed insinuates that she will sleep with Alex if he gets her in on Callie’s surgery. Alex is leading her on to believe that he is going to collect. Meredith is pissed at Alex because he is technically still married to Izzie (even though she abandoned him).

“Turns out your stupid Post-It is 10 times the marriage my church wedding ever got me. I'm moving on.”

Meanwhile Charlie (another Mercy Wester) is pissed too because he is totally in love with Reed. More importantly, I’m pissed that I’m wasting my time thinking about the Mercy Westers when the only one I find mildly interesting (Jackson) is nowhere to be found. Sorry, that was harsh. I want to care about you guys (kinda), but there is just so much else happening that is more interesting!

Teddy gave Cristina a solo cardio surgery, but it’s not going to be easy. She’s stuck with an indecisive patient (who played Joy “Moist” Lass on Dead Like Me) who can’t decide between a mechanical, porcine, or bovine valve, all of which require completely different preparation. In the end Cristina gets her to make a decision (“cow or pig?”), but surgery doesn’t go smoothly either. While the patient is in serious danger, Teddy sits back and reads a magazine while Cristina tries to figure out what to do. The patient makes it, but we’re left over with some Teddy/Owen drama that makes Teddy quit. Cristina isn’t about to loose another cardio attending, especially one that is finally pushing her, so she goes into a rant that Teddy can have anything she wants if she stays.

Teddy: “I want Owen.”
Cristina: “Fine! Done! Take him!”

Oops! The look on Cristina’s face tells us that she just realized she actually would trade Owen for her career. If that isn’t enough to get Teddy to hang around, I don’t know what is.

Side note: Did Mercy West bring it’s cheery wall colors with them or something? Where did that paint come from? What hospital am I in?

Most importantly we learned, in a blink and you missed it moment, that lesbians do in fact like to be naked together, despite what previous episodes have implied:

Getting Dramatic with ABC's Thursday lineup

Grey’s Anatomy

It was a very different Grey’s this week. A hotel fire caused a hot mess in the emergency room (or as Callie said last season, “we’ve got trauma coming out of our butts!”), and in the crazy confusion, one patient died. Truthfully, I’m willing to bet that several people died, but the death in question is of interest because of the massive neglect surrounding her care. The chief interviews everyone who had any interaction with the patient, which included almost everyone. So what we ended up with was multiple views of the same story, each illuminating a little more about what went down. In the end it was April who neglected to look at the patients throat when she did her initial exam (she got distracted for a moment and skipped that step). If she had done this then she would have noticed soot in the throat and prevented the entire mess that followed and the patient would certainly have survived. She got the axe (not to be confused with the axe in another patient’s chest). Poor April, fired from Grey’s and married to a gay man on Mad Men. She just can’t catch a break. The chief is satisfied that he’s found the responsible party and taken care of the situation. He thinks he’s doing a swell job with this whole merger thing. Derek points out what we are all thinking – that the chief is totally sucking:

''Maybe it's not one doctor, maybe it's too many doctors who don't know each other and who don't trust each other.'' - Derek

Although not involved with the dead patient in question, we got to Arizona lay down an awesome speech on Lexie telling her to stop crying, turn off her feelings, and do her job. She’s hardcore and is easily one of the most level headed and mature doctors at Seattle Grace. Seeing Arizona be so awesome kind of makes me angry that she hasn’t been around since the first season. BTW, is anyone else the tiniest bit concerned that they all treat Lexie like a resident instead of an intern? There weren’t any other interns running around, and Christina certainly wasn’t paying any attention to or caring about what she was doing.

Also, who is chief resident now that Bailey is an attending? Shouldn’t they have one of those?

Flash Forward

ABC is really racking up points on the gay front this year. Thursday is the night of the lesbians – meaning it is now home to the only lesbian characters on network TV. So that’s fun! Their date was a little awkward for me – maybe it was the image that Janis planted in our heads of a three way on the space station with her, Hillary Clinton, and Sarah Palin. Got to give FlashForward credit here, though. We saw Janis and Maya kiss three times, which is three more times than Callie and Arizona this season.

Also:

Dear ABC,

Please don’t show me commercials with Joseph Fiennes speaking with his natural accent right before returning to the show and his American accent. It weirds us out.

Thanks,
The Shapusens

Grey's Anatomy ~ Invasion

Seattle Grace has been taken over by orange people! Okay, fine, people dressed in orange. Whatevs. The residents from Mercy West have landed, and are conveniently wearing their orange scrubs while the blue ones are backordered - just incase you couldn't tell who we were supposed to be hating. The new kids include Kitty from Mad Men, some girl who we vaguely recognize from season 1 of Heroes, the nude model from Sister Hood of the Traveling Pants 2, and some other guy who is a total j-hole to Izzie (which means we automatically like him better than her). Also, they don't eat lunch - so that's just creepy.

I'm going to take this time to say that hospitalized Meredith is my favorite kind of Meredith. While she was having an excellent Aliens inspired rant about how "this is our ship!", I momentarily forgot that we used to hate her. Right now she's down right pleasing. You go girl!

The most relevant parts of the episode to us were everything related to Callie and Arizona. Callie's dad is back in town to make ammends  pray away the gay. Some great moments from both Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw here. Someone conveniently put together all of their scenes together:

Oh yeah, and Izzie got fired and left Alex. Blah blah blah, whatevs. She'll be back, no matter how much we may wish otherwise.

Grey's Anatomy - Yup. George is dead. Sorry.

8 hours of TV recorded on Thursday night, and all me managed to make it through was Grey’s Anatomy and Community? Fail on our part. We started watching Bones, but Direct TV completely jumbled Fox from about 8:30 on – so that was a no go. Grrrr! So here’s a Grey’s recap for now.

Grey’s Anatomy

If you don’t know that George is dead by now, then you don’t deserve to watch TV. Shonda and Co. made no attempt to keep the fates of George and Izzie a secret. George was a gone, while Izzie annoyingly came back to life. Way to ignore her DNR, guys! We totally could have been rid of her!

The premier was 2 hours and covered 40 days in Grey’s time. Everyone grieved in their own way, which included a lot of sex on Meredith and Derek’s part. George’s Mom stuck Callie with the decision of what to do with his organs, as if she wasn’t traumatized enough by the death of her ex. Izzie of course was the only one qualified to make the most obvious decision. I mean, come on, what douchey doctor would refuse organ donation?!? So yes, sadness, mourning, etc. At the funeral Izzie pulled a Mary Tyler Moore and started laughing her ass off (topical Chuckle’s funeral episode reference – what what!). As much as I hate her, the scene made us giggle:

Izzie (still guffawing): George is dead. He's dead. They're about to put him in the ground, and the priest is doing classic rock lyrics, and that girl, that redhead, is crying harder than his mother.

Cristina: You are far more twisted than I ever realized.

Izzie, to Meredith: And you got married on a Post-It!

Meredith: I got married on a Post-It, I did.

Cristina, to Izzie and Alex: And you guys got married for real?!

Izzie: And I got cancer? What?

Yeah, that was pretty much our reaction to last season too.

A little further down the line, Callie checked in with the Chief to see if she was going to get the Ortho Attending position she applied for. Apparently some old dude that we’ve never seen before isn’t retiring, so there is no position for Callie. She flips, and rightly so. She gets to have a nice sassy rant about being a superstar with a scalpel, an tells him that he’s going to rue this day.

"Yeah, I used the word Rue!"

All of this went down in front of Skinner Mitch Pileggi (who is playing a member of the Hospital board, but I'm too lazy to look up his character name). The hire-ups are staging a coup. They’re trying to get rid of the Chief and make Derek the new Chief of Surgery. Did they not hear about his strife beard period last year? Ah well. The Chief has sufficiently pissed us off by being mean to Callie and Arizona, and other people who we care slightly less about.

Don’t worry too much about Callie though. She gets an open Ortho Attending position at Mercy West instead. Oh no, does this mean we’ll see less of Callie? We would be worried if we didn’t already know that Mercy West and Seattle Grace are going to be merging. People who aren’t spoiler whores might have not known this until the end of the episode. So good for you guys! Also happening in Callie land – Mark moves into the apartment across the hall from Callie (and Christina, as we assume this is still the same apartment from last season). Lexie is a little concerned, since Callie has no problem changing in the hall in front of them, or standing in the bathroom while Mark is in the shower to have a conversation of the chief.

Lexie: How gay are you on a scale of one to gay? Because even if you really are gay, he's not. And you're hot.

Callie (sweetly): ''He doesn't look at my boobs anymore. … Not since he met you.'

Awww, that’s nice. Until we realize that she totally didn’t answer the question. Well, we know she’s still dating Arizona, so that’s good enough for us for now.

Speaking of Arizona, she’s spent most of this episode hanging out with Martha Plimpton and her 15 year-old son who is having growing pains of death. She butts heads with the chief, who is being too much of whiny cheapskate to authorize the tests Arizona needs to help fix the kind. After some sneaky business sending the kid to Mercy West to guilt Callie into running the tests (which she does, but isn’t too happy about it), she finally figures out what she thinks is wrong, but needs Derek to authorize tests to prove it (the Chief would of course reject these as well). She and Derek have a nice little moment where she says she finally gets why they call him McDreamy. She’s quick to point out that she’s involved with someone (like he doesn’t already know that?), but still – she gets it. The find the problem which would have never been caught if it wasn’t for this test, and his spine is fixed with a quick snip.

Owen and Cristina have been gradually working their up to a relationship, and finally talk about the whole choking incident. They are cute together and we love them.

Whenever Lexie wasn’t worried about Callie getting up on her man or hanging out with boating accident survivor Clara (or Ceviche as Cristina nicknamed her), so was feeling bad about not being a better friend to George. She did basically completely cut him out and stop talking to him after he refused to acknowledge her affections for him. This led Mark to ask the question no one dared ask:

"This may be bad timing, but I gotta ask: What did that guy have? He wasn't much to look at, but you and Stevens and Torres? Tell the truth. Was he, you know, hung?"

She doesn’t answer, so the world may never know.

In other news, Bailey is grieving weirdly and spends a lot of time yelling at Cristina and riding the elevator. Izzie gets to go home because her cancer is just hanging out being lame like her – meaning it’s not bad enough to keep her as a surgical patient, but she still has cancer and she’ll need to keep up with her treatment and just live with it. In Courntey’s words, Izzie’s cancer sucks just as much as she does. Sex crazed MerDer banish Izzie and Alex to Derek’s trailer (ummm, thanks?). Alex and Izzie aren’t exactly in wedded bliss – but I don’t care about Izzie enough to talk about her any more.

And more stuff happened with more people. Man this episode was long!

To wrap it up, because this is WAY too long again (I fail at shot blog entries this week), the Chief announces that Seattle Grace and Mercy West will be merging (as previously spoiled earlier in the blog) and people are going to get fired, so watch your back!
